Restorative Justice Provides a Framework to Create Lawyers Capable of a Peaceful and Justice-Oriented Practice of Law

Many of us have invested years into our legal practices—often directed at focusing on rights, at the expense of genuine human needs, and expending efforts in an adversarial system where where relationships are frequently undervalued. This approach falls short in achieving the harmony that the law should aim to create—as a means of resolving conflicts and keeping our communities safe. But the good news is: we do better! We don't need to start from scratch. By seamlessly integrating the principles and values of restorative justice into the daily work of attorneys, we unlock opportunities for personal and professional satisfaction within the legal profession. More importantly, we pave the way for healing and repair, strengthening families and communities in the process.

About

I'm Brenda Waugh, and I've been a practicing lawyer since 1987. My journey as a lawyer has been a transformative one. Over the years, I've encountered the challenges of providing true satisfaction for my clients within the traditional legal framework. It left me feeling like something essential was missing. In 2007, I made a pivotal decision to return to graduate school, driven by a quest to find a more compassionate and effective approach to the practice of law.

During my studies, I discovered the profound impact of Restorative Justice. This revelation was more than a theoretical shift; it was a fundamental transformation of my everyday practice of law. Restorative Justice provided a unique and powerful framework that not only resolved legal conflicts but also nurtured healing and personal growth in a way that I had never experienced before. This journey led me to write my book, which explores the integration of restorative justice principles into the legal profession and how it can bring satisfaction and harmony to both lawyers and their clients."
